22 Aug 2011 - Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson

Pre-booked our 1/2 day Fox Glacier walk.

Went to the Fox Glacier guiding which was quite near our hostel at the main road. It was around 0900hrs that the lady guide appeared to give us a briefing. We were asked to exchange our shoes with their boots so that our shoes will be dried and not wet after the walk. Hmm..I would suggest that everything borrowed from them! Bagpack, jackets, etc...cos my bag were dirty, jacket was wet after the walk.

Hmm..I also got problem walking cos I realised my boots borrowed from them were too big!

↓ Love the blue tint of glacier

↓ The guide told me that she loved my hat =)

↓ Actually, it was not that cold. As I went uphill, I got hot but my coat was too bulky to carry on hand.

Full day would require good level of fitness and agility. Lucky I did not book for that.

I had asked our guide what is the difference between Fox Glacier and Frenz Joseph. She said that Frenz Joseph and Fox Glacier was around the same except Frenz Joseph required us to climb more stone track to the glacier! Hmm...

↓ Looks like pregnant.

↓ See the stone beside the glacier? We had to climb all the way up on the stone track! TIRING!

The walk was a very tiring walk. We had to walk steep slope? or should I say walking up stone? It was like climbing Greatwall in China! The guide walked fast making stops for us to catch up. Ok, finally make it to the Glacier, wore the crampons attached to our boots and it was more relaxed on ice cos everybody walked slowly.

↓ Finally reached the glacier?

↓ Our lady guide from spain.

The guide had to make path for us to step on which I think was a hard work for them.

It was quite fun walking on glacier. There was a "cave" and we were asked to go through it. I think it was fun where we had to walk in between narrow ice walls and then slide and go through narrow hole.

Some ice cave. Too small...to allow a person in.

↓ Forgot to mention our walking stick.

Way back to where the bus stop was much easier as it was down slope.

↓ My Lunch before going Lake Matheson

Went to Lake Matheson. It was easy to go to Lake Matheson. From the junction near the Fox Glacier guiding building, there is a sign, Lake Matheson, 6km. Followed the sign and walked straight down the road. There were signage to lead us to Lake Matheson. We strolled around 1.5hrs to reach Lake Matheson. I believed nobody was like us to walk to Lake Matheson cos nobody on the road except us. Vehicle also not much.

↓ Passed by farms.

↓ Poor lamb actually came to us and thought we could give it something or maybe help him get out of the farm?

↓ Goat not in the farm but was chained outside the farm.

↓ While we walked to Lake Matheson, seldom saw cars or people. It was the cow, lamb, horse which accompanied us.

↓ Small cute plants/grass at Lake Matheson track.

To complete the track of Lake Matheson, ie 1 round, estimated 1.5hrs. It should be around 6km too?

Well, "Ang Moh" walked very fast? I and Chong were walking very fast but the Ang Moh walked faster? When we started out, there were no one behind us but when we reached a point, there was this guy reached the point too. Then we left after taking photos and decided to walk faster even with small jog at times! When we made it to another point, the guy also was behind us! ie, he really walked very fast?! We were thinking could he be _______??? maybe this time he reached before we reached?

↓ Mostly, bush on water we saw

Not sure the estimation of the timing between each point were based on what. We timed ourselves and walked very fast to another point and we actually took double of the estimation time. Hmm....

↓ By right we could see Mount Cook, if the cloud never covered it. Hmm..

Completed Lake Matheson. Walking 6km back. Completed, 6km x 3 = 18km + Fox Glacier hill climbing? I had burnt a lot of fats! I just had 2 banana for my dinner cos of my constipation.

↓ Sunset. Love the way the sun changed the colour of the surrounding.

Fox Glacier is a very small town actually. It was quiet, less people? Even most cafe did not open.

↓ Not nice but like artistic?

↓ Wanted to take photo of my red hat.

↓ Wanted to take photo for her passport
