21 Aug 2011 - Punakaiki - Greymouth - Fox Glacier

Planned to wake up early for sunrise, but did not since we already took photos of sunset. Wouldn't it be the same? Anyway, we were tired cos we did not sleep on first night.

We checked out around 1000hrs. Left our bags at the laundry area and we went for a walk. There were so many tracks that we could walk but we chose the easiest. Pororari River Track, estimated 2 hrs, 7 km Loop. From hostel, walked out to the main road, crossed the road and turned left. Walked along the path and will see sign for the track. Before entering the track, there were warnings to inform that bait were placed and were poisoned.

We did not complete the whole track, we walked about 30mins and walked out using another 30 mins.

Returned to the hostel to collect our bags and walked back to the I site.

Board the Intercity bus to Fox Glacier. The bus driver for Intercity will also talk about the places the bus passed. We had frequent stops which I liked cos I need not worry about toilet.

One of the stop, "National Kiwi Centre" at Hokitika. Nothing much around the town. We paid NZ 10 to visit. We were told that we could see Kiwi. However, it was quite hard to see them! The worker had to go into the container with transparent window to feed them. The kiwi did not even come out. The worker even tried to force them out but she got "poke" by their beak. Lucky one of the kiwi came out to have its food!

↓ Super big eel! SCARY!

There were super big eel too! Other than that, nothing much to see.

The National Kiwi Centre is situated in the heart of Hokitika in an undercover facility that provides a guaranteed viewing of kiwi in our nocturnal house that replicates their natural environment. During your visit you can take part in feeding the giant eels (10am, 12 noon and 3pm daily). The eels are approximately 85 to 100 years old. You can view the tuatara then wander through to see whitebait in various stages of their life and see other west coast creatures of the night.

Reached Fox Glacier inn around 1740hrs. The bus driver was very nice to stop us at our hostel.

↓ View outside window?

We were given 4 bed bunk with no additional cost all by ourselves! Well, basically, not much people came to this town. Most of the people preferred Franz Joseph. Anyway, we had TV as well! Finally! Oh ya our room number, 4, same as Punakaiki!

Went for a short walk to explore the town. Nothing much. Most cafe closed. Even the cafe beside our hostel was closed too! We went in to ask for menu and they told us they were not operating. He mentioned something about the paster they were serving. Maybe they had made bookings? Anyway...how to they earn? Ok, the owner was nice to make us something. They made us Lamb shank with mashed potato and vegetables, NZ 20. Chong told me the staff and owner ate the same as us. Could we have eaten their share?
