19 Aug 11 - KL airport to Christchurch

Flew to KL at 11pm and reached KLCC at 12 midnight.
KL budget airport was like train station, old and not as good as Singapore's budget terminal.
Seats were limited, people sleeping on floor and a lot of "refugee" looking people with some smell, ok, I was bad thinking about them as dirty looking people?

↓ Airport

We managed to get seat but we were asked to leave the airport cos they had to do fogging! Fogging in aircon area??We were asked to stay outside the airport for almost 1 hour..all restaurant closed, including Mac Donald for pest control, they stated.

↓ We were asked to wait outside airport

Bored...we got back in around 3am and I dozed off till 5am.

↓ Check in counter, mostly Air asia counter.

Check in at the counter around 6am. Bad news, from Sep onwards, 10 RM will be charged for checking in at the counter. This applied to most of the air asia check in counter including Singapore. We had to check in online to avoid paying extra, however, by checking in online means we had to pre book our seats at additional cost too! Hmm...

Reached Christchurch after almost 10 hours flight. Reached around 11.30pm NZ time which is 4 hours before Singapore. Was it "before" or "after"? anyway, Singapore time would be 7.30pm.

Hmm, we seem to have problem with the custom, we were asked to show our itinerary both at KLCC and Christchurch airport. Did we look like we will not return?

Pre-booked "Super Shuttle" bus and there at the airport after claiming our luggage, someone would held a piece of paper showing our name. They sent us to our accomodation, Jailhouse.

Mountfort Cell Block - Accommodation with a colourful history

This important example of "Gothic Revival" architecture was built in 1874 under the guidance of Benjamin W Mountfort.

Constructed out of 60cm thick concrete, which at the time was a relatively new material, the building has survived in pristine condition.

When opened, the building catered for the needs of both sentenced and remand prisoners.

Over the years the building has been used as a jail, a woman's prison and a military camp.

The Mountfort cell block and remaining perimeter walls are scheduled as a protected item, for historical and architectural reasons, in the Christchurch City Plan.
The prison was closed in 1999, meaning all Christchurch Prisons were then located outside of the city boundaries. The prison lay empty until early 2006 when the building was bought by local couple - Kirsty and Grant, who renovated the building and Jailhouse Accommodation opened in late 2006. The Jailhouse in now a top-rated, award winning, budget backpacker Christchurch Accommodation and a fine asset for Christchurch City.

Chong thought I wanted to book the house cos I wanted to experience living in Jail, hmm...that was not my intention. I did not know the history. Wanted to stay there cos it was near the railway, thought of taking train to Greymouth initially. Well, anyway, we were going to stay in a cell?

↓ Outside of Jailhouse

Reception closed after 9pm? Not sure the time but we were given a set of password to enter Jailhouse. Anyway, we managed to break into jail and was welcome by our other backpackers. Hmm...It was embarrassing cos we spent sometime figuring out how to open the door and these people were observing us.

↓ Some interior photos of Jailhouse.

At first, we were thinking why we were given password and why there were no people mending the reception, could it be something coming out at night? It was previously jail housing prisoners anyway. Sure there were something out there??

↓ Male toilet.

↓ Some scary looking empty cell...

We collected out key from the reception table with our name beside. Yes, self service. Went into our cell on own...

↓ Our cell...

↓ SEE something in the photo below??!!!!!!!!!!!

Bad things about this accomodation was there was no heater in the room, they only provided us with warm winter-weight duvets. YES! WE WERE COLD TILL WE COULD NOT SLEEP! I had to climb out of bed to wear my thermal wear and still cold! Lucky we only stayed there for a night!
